MYTHS are the genes we live by.

For a long time (I can now say decades) I have been exploring rituals, many kinds. It is one reason that I became a clown, which led me to study healing arts, which drew me to become a minister, which called me to form a deeper commitment to the arts.

I was writing an ensemble piece a while back, “At Thebes.” I traveled deep into our mythic history. This piece took me to the world of Oedipus and Jocasta. If you don’t know who they were, read the play, “Oedipus Rex.”

As I poured over literature and scholarly papers, I was struck by what a slippery slope is history. Like many plays, this story was based on a myth, a story that may or may not have happened, at least not with the details that got passed down and embellished by the storytellers. In some accounts Jocasta did not die, Oedipus did, he was exiled, he was not…etc. As I filled my notebook with these contradictory facts, the themes of my play came out of the smoke and mirrors.

The storyteller is the story.

Those who control the stories, control our ‘reality.’

The third major theme is intimately related to my larger purpose and it has to do with transforming the nature of the feminine in our lifetime. In Greek mythology, there is a hero. Let it suffice to say, this individual is a man.

Basically, I believe myself to be as valuable and heroic as all beings. Myths are the memes of our social agreements: our cultural ‘DNA.’ (Meme: a cultural item transmitted by repetition in a manner analogous to the biological transmission of genes) Jocasta is the heroine in my retelling of the myth. The third theme, of this piece

We all must face the call of our destiny.

Of course, there are twists and turns along the way-

It is a good time to create new myths and reclaim old ones. I think, on some level, most of us are feeling this, or some form of psychic indigestion. In the past weeks I have released myself from old ideas about artists being freaks or needing to suffer. This is why I am making a commitment to share some of my creative process to you, my friends and family.

Creation Myth In A Minor – Sharing Creation Process

How is a picture like a poem, a journal like a sketchbook?

The lines blur, as I walk the path that leads away from the city of poles.

“Rise up, from the ashes once again, dear friend…”

These are precious days. There is no more smoke in the air. Let the wind fill my sails. I am homeward bound.

Zounds! These gems in the water burn memories from my eyes. When I return I will be both the empress and a babe!

On a day of quiet sailing I hear the whale’s song. Many times I heard it before (mostly while sleeping), but I could not receive them as now. How wonder full to take in her melody!

I cannot know my dear companion’s tongue. We are destined to be strange to one another throughout this life. Yet, as I surrender, to the utter fatigue which nearly destroyed me, to the ebbs and flows of my long-haul perilous journey…as I sit in this moment secure, in this solid boat, built and damaged and many times repaired by my own hand…her song strokes me like the soothing back rubs of my long gone grandmother…and like the loving caress of the one…

…and I come to know its meaning. Even if I never see this opulent bowl of the high seas again, smell her briny cocktail of life and death, feel the sharp darts of her storms or the gulpy slaps of her cajoling, I will forever carry this song within me. I know what it is to be rocked like an infant in Mine Own Mother’s arms.

Home. I have already arrived, even though there are many miles and footfalls ahead. I will receive them as well.

Sing sweet sister, blue and gray (mirror in my eyes), from the womb cave of all time, the river-sea, from the soul of ouroboros.

Bella Deluxe Entertainment presents

“Before the End”
A one person movement theater work, written and performed by Karen Fox.

In the deep future, there are no trees, nothing can grow in the fetid ground. The rain rips the skin, but must be caught and purified for drinking. One woman survives, except there may be someone ‘across the way’.,

This post-apocalyptic ‘body opera’ explores issues of sustainability, in our relationship to the earth, as well as our own human nature.

A Bella Deluxe production, “Before the End” is available to tour to theaters, universities, conferences and festivals. Residencies and workshops also possible, around the topic of ‘creating artistic expression as an active member of sustainability and peace movement.
